Ashura is a pivotal commemoration in the Shi‘a Muslim calendar. It is perhaps not the most photogenic of festivals, as it has often involved people beating themselves with chains or cutting themselves with various other implements.1
The Times has a good series of photographs that doesn’t linger too much on the gore that all worth looking over.
