Alternative Medicine Charlatan Shuts Down Website

February 20, 2008

From The Register:

A discredited doctor has forced an ISP to silence a website that aimed to debunk claims made by his “Royal College of Alternative Medicine” (RCAM).

The website, Quackometer, run by Oxfordshire IT worker Andy Lewis, was shuttered by ISP Netcetera on Monday following threats to sue for defamation from Joseph Chikelue Obi.

Crikey, an incompetent, corrupt and dangerous quack involved in alternative medicine. Who would have thought it?

I am going to post an excerpt from one of Dan’s (of dansdata.com) letter replies, which I think covers my feeling about this particular issue:

“Homeopathic” remedies, and other “alternative” treatments, are not well regulated. Actually, in most countries they’re regulated only by the people who sell them (it’s a peculiar characteristic of many alt-med boosters that they see corruption and kickbacks everywhere in orthodox medicine, but have no problem with alternative practitioners who directly profit from selling the alleged remedies they prescribe).

Dan’s written extensively on the subject with real intelligence and wit. I’d love to see him collect all his writings on this subject in one place. For now, just go over to his site and type ‘Homeopathy’ into the search box.
